Women still not having enough babies. March 27, 2006

Another one of those news articles abut how european women just arn’t breeding quick enough.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4768644.stm

I’m really busy but thought I’d point out my highlight:

“Europe is still feeling its way in this area, and may, some say, have to come to terms with the fact that there are women remaining childless or having small families by choice.

Recent evidence from Germany suggests that women may actually want fewer children than the two so often seen as the desirable norm – indeed some are happy with none at all.”

You don’t say….

“Demographic decline causes anxiety because it is thought to go hand-in-hand with economic decline.”
– that scared me. Christ, I thought the world was dead over-populated?! But hey, must keep capitalism going: BREED DAMN YOU!

It is.

What the artical was really saying was not enough white middle class women with good families and good prospects are having children. That’s why I really hate these articles it’s all about a certain type of woman not having children. At the same time we have loads of policies in place to stop other kinds of women becoming mothers, and if that doesn’t work then we just start applying stigmas left right and centre.

I’m guessing they werrn’t talking about giving single teenage mothers payments for having children.

I very much doubt it. While this is an obviously sexist discourse, I actually think its more of a racist and classist discourse. The anxiety is really all about breeding the “right” kind of people as you say.

If middle-class white women were having lots of kids, I wonder if they’d call it a ‘population explosion’ or a ‘baby boom.’
